The Milkman of Humankindness.

Before the holidays we had a go at trying out different techniques and styles to create a music video. In the video above, me and my partner had a go at making some shots for an abstract video. We then had to add it to other people's work. This helped me to learn how to cut on the beat and helped me to take time to film for longer to insure that the clips flowed together.

Applying Marketing Strategies: Randell's video

Artist's name: Randell's video
Genre: Hardcore punk
Type of label: Independent

The marketing strategies I am going to look at are:

- Merchandise
- Synergy
- Broadcast
- Print
New media technology

In applying these marketing strategies I am going to write a description of my strategy for Randell's video, how it fits with the bands financial model and how the strategies will reach Randell's video target audience.

Merchandise:

As Randell's Video is a independent label we teamed by with Clerks, an independent film, to create a soundtrack for the new upcoming sequel to the film. Clerks asked Randell's video to create the soundtrack after hearing the band play at a small venue. Randell's video accepted Clerks offer as the target audience for both film and band label are similar, young adults.
In keeping with the band's tie with Clerks film, Randell's video's logo, found on there merchandise, are similar to how Clerks is written on there merchandise.

For Example:

Randell's video t-shirt (£20)

Randell's video badge (£4)

Synergy:

to tie in with Clerks and to promote both labels, Randell's video created a new song to play in the Clerks 3 trailer. Also, to promote both products, Randell's video's new advertising campaign features popular quotes and some of the main characters in Clerks.

A draft version of Randell's video's new advertising poster

Similar to McFly in just my luck, Randell's video will have a small appearance in the new Clerks film. Although this is still being talked through with Clerks production team and Randell's video's label, Randell's video will properly appear in a short scene, where they will be performing in the location of a pub or small venue where the characters of the film are hanging out.

As Randell's video has limited money, they have found a good way of advertising themselves to there target audience, without spending to much money.

Broadcast:

Randell's video will be performing on the small or alternative stages at Download festival and V festival later on this year in order to raise their profile. The small stages costs less to perform on, yet Randell's video will still be advertised on the festivals websites and posters, which will help advertise the band. They thought this would be a good way of reaching their target audience, of young adults, as it is this age range who usually attend festivals.
Randell's video has also tried to raise their profile by having interviews and live sessions on radio stations.
Such as:
- Kerrang: Live Session
- Radio 1: Live Session
- X FM: Interview
- NME: Unknown artists segment

Print:

Randell's video will appear in a small feature in an upcoming issue of Kerrang magazine. They thought Kerrang magazine would be the best place to advertise themselves, as there target audience is similar to that of Kerrangs, so Kerrang's readers will be likely to be interested in music similar to Randell's video. The feature will also include the band's website, to help raise knowledge of the website.

In order to advertise the band without spending a lot of  money, on Randell's video's website the band have a 'GIVEWAYS' page where fans can enter competitions to when band merchandise and tickets to see them perform live. As Randell's video is an independent label, they need to try to raise money however they can. So, through these competitions involve texting answers to questions about the band. Ever text costs £1.

New Media Technology:

Randell's video uses new media technology to try to raise their profile. They mostly use websites, as websites are usually a free way of gaining attention quickly.

Here is a list of websites where Randell's video can be found:

Here you can download the band's music, purchase band merchandise, read up on what the band are doing and find out about tour dates.

- YouTube
The band has their own YouTube page, include vlogs, Q&As from fans, video updates of how the band is getting on/tour dates and live covers of songs.

- Facebook
Randell's video regular uploads pictures of them recording their new album in recording studios across America, pictures from their tours and update their status with information about how the band is getting on.
- Myspace
          - Here the band's music can be played. Also, their Myspace page includes links to their website.
- Twitter
The band regular updates/tweets about upcoming tour dates and about what they are getting up to. E.g. Meeting F**ked up.

In order to gain publicity quickly each of the above have links to each other.
Being a band that targets a young male audience, Randell's video thought that using new technology to help them raise interest in would be a good idea. To reach their target audience even more, Randell's video can be heard in Xbox games, such as Halo.
